BRIEF HISTORY OF INSTITUTES (VEDIC SCHOOLS)
1. In 1995 a humble beginning was made in S. Thimmapuram village Kirlampudi Mandalam, East Godavari District (maternal village of Panduranga Rao Malyala, 3rd son of Venkatachalapathi was delivered by his mother Smt. Pullammagaru (Praphulla –name of Parvati)on Friday May 23rd, 1941 at 10:05AM (Vrishabha Nama Samvatsara, vaishaka Bahula Trayodasi Sukravaram Aswini Nakshatra Truteeya Pada Mesha Raasi, Karkataka Lagnam). It began with one Acharya of Krishna Yajur Veda in his own house with very few students. The progress was very slow.
2. On April 24, 1996 the school was moved to 12 Bhaskar nagar Kakinada (house of Mahalakshmi and Panduranga Rao Malyala). Kakinada is a district headquarters.
(Dhatrunama Samvatsara Vaishaka Suddha Chathurthi Bhanuvora Rohini Nakshatra Midhuna Lagnam). Again the Institute had one Acharya, Sri Sankara Sarma Savitala teaching Krishna Yajur Veda with 6 students and with a budget of Rs 5000/month.
3. In 2000- August due to increase of students the building was renovated. Acharyas for all the four Vedas, a manager, a cook, an administrator, warden, cleaner, etc., were appointed. The school started with 25 students and the budget was Rs 50,000/month.
4. By Divine command of Sai Baba in Nov 2001 a 5 acres mango grove was purchased in the village of Ganganapally, a suburb of Kakinada. The school was moved to a rented house of Late Sri Rao Gopal Rao on Dec 5th 2001 which was close to the proposed mango grove. The building for school (64’ by 64’), dining hall, kitchen and staff quarters (84’ by 64’) and a guest house of Sarvato Bhadra Mandalam Shape were constructed.
5. The school was opened on August 23rd 2002 with 6 teachers, an administrator, cook, warden, gardener, security guard with 64 students. It is running with a monthly budget of 1,00,000 Rs/month and increased to Rs 125,000
6. By grace of Sai Baba construction of another school was started on Friday Jan 30, 2004 at Puttparthy. An 84’ by 84’ school building, Yagna Saala (64’ by 24’), Pakashala (108’ by 24’-Kitche, dining and store), Higher Learning Institute (64’ by 64’) with 7 Kuteers, staff quarters, Gosala and Administrative building were constructed. The school was formally inaugurated on March 4rd, 2004 at Sri R.V. Janakiranayya Kalyana Mandapam at 9:34AM. Indeed the Patasala was inaugurated by Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba on January 15,2004-Makara Sankranti and Mahalakshmi and Panduranga Rao Malyala blessed by Bhagavan in the morning around 10 A.M.
7. On Feb 17th, 2005 the Institute was begun with 3 Acharyas RG Veda, Krishna Yajur Veda, Smartham with 9 students, Administrator, Cook, Gardener, and a monthly budget of Rs.50, 000. Later Sama vedam Acharya added. There were 43 students. Then we have also a Nadaswara and Drum Acharayas with 20 students were also joined. Later due to Divine will the strength fallen. Currently there about 25 students and 2 Acharyas. We hope this will increase to 5o or more in 2011 and efforts and prayers are being to expand the students and and Acharyas. Expecting students from Paunjab, Assam and Orissa with 10 students from each place and 3 more Acharyas.
8.In January 14-2007 another school is started at Katra –Vaishnavi Devi Mandir foot hills-Jammu kKashmir with 7 students and one pundit from Dehradun -as per Divine Command and with lot of Grace and mysterious circumstances 1008 blankets were distributed and annadanam was rendered in 2006 December. This school is opened after continuous prayers from 1979 . Currently there are 20 students, one Achraya, from Vaaranaasi, cook, cleaning person running in a rented place. Sukla Yajurveda of Maadhyandini Saakha (branch) which is prevalent in North India is being imparted. The monthly budget is Rs 36,000
9. Again by Divine Command of Baba another school in Gangtok –Sikkim started on January 14th 2008 with few students .Currently there 12 students and one Acharya. The school is in a rented place and the monthly budget is Rs 24,000. Sukla Yajurveda is being imparted.
10. Again by Divine Command another school in Srinagar-Jammu Kashmir started in October 2009 with 10 students and one Pundit. There were 5 lakh Kashmiri pundits in 1989. After militacy there are about 5000 now. But there is a great potency to have more students and protect our ancient Saivism of Bharateeya Culture and wealth.
11.Recently Sai Baba gave a command to start in Tawang –Arunachala Pradesh. We don’t know how to proceed which is the very border of Tibet. Of course there flight from Delhi-Gauhati-Tawang. It is strong military and Buddhist monestry is there . Financial assistance is needed. Once Bhagavan Baba cured a Swamy from Arunachala Pradesh when visited Puttaparthy with cancer. Also gave the yantras for Soorya and Chandra (Sun and Moon) temples to construct since the people of Arunachala Pradesh worship Sun and the Moon.
If this school comes into existence the borders will be safe and culture will be in tact.(See the Tapovanam-parayana grandham-of Sri Sathya Sai Sathcharitra –Sacred Life story of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba byJandhyala Venkateswara Sastry-Published in almost all Indian languages.

MAHALAKSHMI PANDU RANGA RAO MALYALA
INSTITUTES OF SPRIRITUAL SCIENCE, HIGHER LEARNING AND VEDA RESEARCH :

Students in Kakinada Institute
Dear Sai Family,
If one is spiritually inclined, being a Vedic priest is a wonderful profession. One gets to spend the bulk of one’s days in the worship of God. In addition, one gets to provide the devotees with hope and love. A priest shares in the joys and sorrows of the devotees. He helps families make major life transitions, such as first hair cutting, Saraswati diksha, marriage, and eventually death. It is said that one must have accumulated a lot of merit from prior births to become a priest.
On the other hand, those who go through traditional priest training must endure a lot of struggle and difficulties. Boys chosen for priest training must leave home at age eight or nine, and come live at a “Veda Pathasala”, where they receive training. Thrown in with other boys, they encounter a new world. They are assigned a “guru” or teacher, and must get used to living dormitory style. They visit home on holidays.
At the Veda Pathasala, those who want to become priests learn “smartam”. This is a 3-4 year program, where they learn all about the duties of priests. They memorize and learn the meaning of perhaps 100 suktas, such as Rudra Namakam, Sri Sukta, etc. The more serious students start training to become “pundits”. They master an entire Veda. It takes them eight – ten years. There are four major Vedas – Sama, Rig, Yajur (Krishna or Sukla), and Atharva. Depending on their family tradition, they choose one Veda to study.
For many boys, it is a little bit of a shock to be taken from their loving homes and to this new environment. But within a few weeks, most adapt well, as children do. The boys have to get up very early in the morning, and with the exception of an hour or two of playtime, work until the early evening. The gurus expect strict discipline from the children, which may seem a little harsh at first. But over time, the love between the students and their gurus is evident. Perhaps it is this love that allows them to endure the many hardships and eventually get the exalted status of priest or pundit.
The typical Veda Pathasala is not like many modern private schools, which are run for profit. The guru provides education for his students at no charge. When Saint Panduranga Malyala founded the MAHALAKSHMI PANDU RANGA RAO MALYALA INSTITUTE OF SPIRITUAL SCIENCE, HIGHER LEARNING, AND VEDA RESEARCH in 1995, he decided to keep his Veda Pathasalas traditional in every way. At his schools, housing, food, and instruction are all provided free to the students. The parents only provide clothing and textbooks for their child.
Saint Panduranga and his wife Mahalakshmi are great exponents of the Veda. Since 1991, he has been performing large WORLD PEACE YAGNAS in India. In 1995, he hired his first Guru to teach Krishna Yajur Veda at the Malyala family home in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. In 2002, he completed construction of his first school building and residential facility in the suburbs of Kakinada. The school has 60 full time residential students, studying Krishna Yajur Veda, Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Atharva Veda, and Smartam.
In 2005, Saint Malyala completed construction of a second major school in Puttaparthi, A.P., home of Sathya Sai Baba. The School currently has 25 students studying the Vedas. Not satisfied with these successes, in recent years Pandurangaji has started schools in Sikkim and Jammu Kashmir. At all these schools, Saint Malyala has bravely born all the costs for building, maintenance, food, guru’s salaries, and so forth.
Most of us do not have the tremendous good fortune to grow up attending a Veda Pathasala and spending our life in the worship of God. We have other duties. But there is something else we can do which is even better. We can support others in becoming priests and pundits. It only costs about $54 a month to support a child at the Veda Pathasalas in India. That’s only $650 a year! In the course of a TEN year education, that’s $6,500, less than the cost of ONE semester at most U.S. colleges today!
My wife and I have been supporting Saint Malyala’s Veda Pathasalas since 1995 for two reasons. First, we recognize the value of preserving the Vedic knowledge, which is rapidly disappearing in India. Second, as businesspeople, we recognize real value when we see it. Where else could we get so much “bang” for our buck? (Or perhaps to put it another way, how else could we do so much good with so little investment?) Not only could we completely educate a child for less than $7,000, but that child, with a little luck, will benefit and educate many, many more people in the Vedas over the course of their lifetime. To us, that seems like a tremendous investment for our charitable funds.
To help preserve the Veda, and to brighten up the life of a young boy, I urge you to make an investment today in Saint Malyala’s Veda Pathasalas. Every dollar invested goes directly to help a young scholar. To make a donation please do not hesitate to contact me with questions about the Veda Pathasalas or Temple at 412-374-9244 or at craig@saiaustin.org, or (512) 528-0807 or Panduranga rao at 412 537 8455, pandu_malyala@yahoo.com .
